Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek (3,210m)

8-Day Classic Sunrise Trek

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is the most popular short trek in the Annapurna region and an ideal introduction to Himalayan trekking. In just 8 days, you'll experience the full magic of Nepal — terraced hillsides, charming Gurung and Magar villages, dense rhododendron forests, and one of the most celebrated sunrise viewpoints in the Himalayas at Poon Hill (3,210m). The panoramic vista from the summit encompasses over a dozen major peaks, including Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna South, Machapuchare (Fishtail), Nilgiri, and the entire Annapurna range.

This trek is perfect for first-time trekkers, families, and anyone with limited time who still wants an authentic mountain experience. The trails are well-maintained with comfortable teahouse lodges offering warm beds, hot meals, and even Wi-Fi along most of the route. Despite its accessibility, the trek doesn't compromise on scenery — the views are genuinely world-class, the cultural encounters are heartfelt, and the sense of accomplishment upon watching sunrise from Poon Hill is profound.

ESSENTIAL TIPS

Fitness Level

This trek is suitable for beginners with reasonable fitness. The main challenge is Day 3's stone staircase — regular walking and stair climbing for 4-6 weeks beforehand will make it much more enjoyable.

Poon Hill Morning

The sunrise climb takes about 45 minutes. Bring a headlamp, warm layers, and gloves — it's cold and dark at 4:30am. The viewpoint can get busy, so arrive early for the best position. Hot tea is available at the top.

Best Season

October-November delivers the clearest skies and most reliable views. March-April offers warmer temperatures and blooming rhododendrons. December-February is cold but uncrowded with excellent visibility. Avoid June-August monsoon.

Packing Light

This is a lower-altitude trek so you don't need extreme cold weather gear. A good down jacket, waterproof layer, fleece, and broken-in trekking boots cover most needs. A sleeping bag liner can add comfort at teahouses.

Family Friendly

This trek is suitable for children aged 10+ with some hiking experience. The teahouses are comfortable, the trails are well-marked, and the daily distances are manageable. It's a wonderful introduction to trekking for families.
